The word sustainable in regard to fabric has to do with its environmental impact. Every store purchase we make, whether it be a honey crisp apple or a pair of acid-washed jeans, has an impact on the environment in some way or the other.

Sustainable fabrics essentially aim to provide mother nature some relief; the fashion industry as a whole accounts for up to 10% of global carbon dioxide emissions, and 35% of the microplastics found in oceans. So how can you help your mother? For starters, when shopping, look for “Oeko-Tex,” “Fair Trade,” “Bluesign,” or other textile certifications that assure the product you’re searching for is safe for the environment and safe for you. Look for sustainable fabrics. Here’s a few of our favorites:

Types of Sustainable Fabric:

Organic Cotton: Grown without pesticides from seeds that have not been genetically modified. Organic cotton is grown, processed, dyed, and finished with a focus on building ecosystem health and reducing the use of toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. However, cotton is a thirsty plant and requires heavy irrigation to cultivate which is a trade-off to its’ sustainability. Organic Cotton can be processed in a variety of ways to produce wonderfully soft garments, with that familiar cotton “ahh.”

Hemp: The hemp plant, a variety of cannabis, has little to no THC. It grows quickly, does not require pesticides, and actually improves the health of its soil. Hemp requires more water and nutrients to grow than most grain crops. Hemp is a durable fiber that is generally non-irritating to the skin, but is coarser than cotton and is commonly used to create rope, shoes, and handbags.

Bamboo: Grows quickly, does not require fertilization, limits soil erosion, and self-regenerates. The bamboo plant does not require any irrigation. Bamboo can be processed in a variety of ways. The most sustainable process uses a closed loop system, where 99.5% of the chemicals are recycled. The fabric made from bamboo is lightweight and breathable. It wicks moisture, resists odor and is buttery-soft.

Faceplant Bamboo® is Oeko-Tex 100 certified, which ensures our products only use sustainably grown bamboo, certified to be free of any chemical residues, and that we choose environmentally friendly closed-loop processes.

How to Decide:

Some of the least sustainable fabrics, such as nylon or polyester, can feel amazing and be more affordable. We understand that sometimes budget and accessibility dictates. But we believe in quality over quantity, and we believe you can reduce your clothing budget and your carbon footprint at the same time. Faceplant is designed for longevity. It launders beautifully again and again. Faceplant isn’t fast fashion - its slow fashion, with sustainable fabrics and thoughtful designs. If you prioritize your health, sleep, skin, and the environment - Faceplant Bamboo® is made for you.
